Looking for an updated RumChata price guide? We’ve got you sorted.

When you become an adult there are certain things you’re supposed to leave behind. You’re supposed to get a bed frame instead of having your mattress right on the floor. You’re supposed to start drinking coffee and stop drinking Coca-Cola.

Finally, you’re supposed to stop eating delicious sugary cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and start eating bran flakes or some other high fiber cereal.

This may all be true but there has been a recent invention that lets you live in both worlds. You can be an adult while having a drink that brings you back to the carefree times of your youth. That drink is RumChata.

RumChata Price, Sizes & Buying Guide (UPDATED 2024) (1)

RumChata is a cream liqueur that tastes like that last bit of milk from your bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The fun taste of sweet milk and cinnamon intermingles perfectly with the grown-up taste of Caribbean Rum.

It’s a flavor that is so nostalgic that it’s a wonder that this concoction didn’t exist for most of our lifetimes.

A Brief History of RumChata

RumChata Price, Sizes & Buying Guide (UPDATED 2024) (2)

RumChata was officially born in 2009. It was the invention of a man named Tom Mass. At the time Mass came up with RumChata he was no stranger to the alcohol business.

He had recently retired from the Jim Beam brand which is known for its popular bourbon whiskey. Retirement didn’t suit Tom Mass. He reportedly got bored and started talking to a friend about a prepackaged Horchata drink.

Horchata is a beloved drink around the world but to this point was mostly made at home and not easily available on the grocery store shelves.

There are a few different versions of Horchata but the one that interested Mass the most was the Mexican version which has a sweet creamy cinnamon flavor.

It is made from some combination of long-grain white rice, almonds, cinnamon sticks, water, sugar, vanilla, and milk. He launched his non-alcoholic horchata blend in 2007 but there were problems.

It had some demand but it didn’t make money. He needed a way to make his product stand out so he could put out a premium product but also make some money. The answer was to add some booze, specifically rum.

Adding rum gave the drink something unique and it also gave it the name that is hard to forget: RumChata. Once Tom had his product it was like a rocketship to the top of the sales charts.

RumChata quickly became one of the top cream liqueurs in the marketplace. It was also different from most other cream liqueurs due to the addition of the cinnamon flavor.

RumChata was acquired by the E&J Gallo company in 2021. E&J Gallo is primarily known for their wine portfolio but they are also responsible for brands like New Amsterdam Vodka, , and many others.

As mentioned RumChata is a cream liqueur that recreates the flavor of horchata and mixes it with rum.

Liqueur by definition is an alcoholic drink made by adding flavorings to traditionally more powerful spirits like whiskey, rum, gin, and vodka.

RumChata wanted their drink to be extremely approachable and that is apparent when you see the alcohol percentage.

The addition of the sweet horchata to high-proof rum results in an extremely approachable alcohol percentage of 13.75 percent. This is definitely on the low end of all liqueurs but hey that means you can drink more of it, right?

RumChata Prices, Variations & Sizes

RumChata is available in three distinct flavors. All the varieties are made with fresh real dairy cream, five times distilled Caribbean rum, and extremely high-quality natural cinnamon and vanilla. These premium ingredients also demand a premium price. RumChata generally is priced higher than its other cream liqueur counterparts.

  • RumChata Limón takes the original RumChata flavor and seamlessly adds a hint of lemon. RumChata Limón was released in 2020.
  • RumChata Peppermint Bark adds a holiday twist to the traditional RumChata flavor. Adding the decadent flavor of chocolate-covered peppermint to RumChata results in a one-of-a-kind drinking experience. This seasonally released treat was introduced in 2020. It’s something to look out for every holiday season.

RumChata Alternatives and Comparisons

If you walk by the empty spot in your grocery store’s liquor aisle where RumChata should be you might start to sweat.

That situation is certainly a bummer but no cause for panic as there are some other cream liqueurs that can work in an emergency situation.

Probably the most well-known cream liqueur is Baileys Irish Cream. There are some definite differences between Baileys and RumChata as Baileys is made with Irish whiskey and does not taste like cinnamon.

It is however a premium cream liqueur that can easily be mixed in co*cktails that call for RumChata for just about the same price. If you absolutely need that horchata flavor in your liqueur then another option is Consuego Horchata Cream Liqueur.

Consuego Horchata Cream Liqueur has a flavor profile that compares to the original RumChata but it is not considered a premium product. It is available at almost half the price of RumChata.

How to Drink RumChata

Even though RumChata has a very specific flavor profile it is also very approachable and adaptable.

It can be enjoyed straight, on ice, added to coffee, added to desserts, as part of a RumChata signature co*cktail, or substituted for any cream liqueur in other co*cktails.

RumChata does contain real dairy cream but it does not need to be refrigerated. It can be stored at room temperature in the pantry. For the best flavor, RumChata should be consumed within a year of opening.

RumChata will last for a number of years if it stays sealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is RumChata Gluten Free?

Yes, RumChata is gluten free. Most distilled spirits are gluten free but once other flavors are added it can get more complicated.

Thankfully for those with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity the flavors in the cream liqueur do not contain gluten.

2. Is RumChata vegan?

RumChata is a cream liqueur that is made with dairy cream. Since one of RumChata’s main components comes from a cow it is decidedly not a vegan product.

Horchata, the beverage that RumChata is patterned after, is often vegan and made with rice milk instead of dairy milk. The inventors of RumChata wanted a liqueur that was as creamy as possible and made the choice to use dairy.

3. Does RumChata make other products?

Yes, they do! RumChata has two other products in the marketplace. Both of them have close ties to coffee.

RumChata makes RumChata MiniChatas creamer cups. The MiniChatas looks like a standard single-serve cup of creamer but they contain RumChata goodness. Yes, that also includes the rum.

Most flavored creamers, even those fashioned after other liqueurs, are alcohol-free but not the case for MiniChatas. They do contain alcohol.

If you thought RumChata was fun to say you’re really going to get excited about their Iced Coffee variation. It’s called FrappaChata. FrappaChata is an iced coffee made with RumChata.

FrappaChata comes in original flavor and mocha. Just like the creamer, FrappaChata also contains alcohol.

4. What co*cktails or shots can I make with RumChata?

Cinnamon Toast Shot

  • RumChata has that unmistakable Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavor on its own but if you want to turn it up a notch you can mix this shot.
  • 1 Part RumChata
  • 1 Part Cinnamon Whiskey
  • Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake well, and strain into a shot glass.

RumChata White Russian

  • 1 oz E&J VSOP Brandy
  • 1 oz Dark Creme De Cacao
  • 1 oz Heavy Cream
  • Add all ingredients to an ice-filled co*cktail shaker. Shake well, strain into a martini glass, and serve (optionally garnish with cinnamon).

Interesting Facts & Myths

While RumChata can be used in many scenarios there are some times when it’s important to remember that it is made with real dairy cream.

Make sure to avoid mixing RumChata with highly acidic fruit juices or your drink might curdle. That’s not something anyone wants – that is unless you have questionable friends that bought you a Cement Mixer shot for your birthday.

A Cement Mixer is a shot that is considered a rite of passage and also one of the worst things you can put in your mouth.

The concept is to purposely add fresh lime juice to cream liqueur so that it curdles in your mouth. Best to avoid this scenario and use RumChata as directed.
